Equities paused in a quiet session after both the Dow and S&P 500 finished at records on Friday following solid earnings from JPMorgan Chase and other large banks. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,314.43 for a gain of 1.97 points or 0.03%.

Stocks could have done much worse: Despite China's better-than-expected second-quarter GDP growth, Chinese stocks posted their biggest daily drop of the year. Earnings in the first quarter rose by approximately 15 percent. Credit quality and efficiency are relative bright spots. No market moving economic reports were released on Monday. Technology stocks were higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector increasing 0.02%.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 2.79 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,431.60. Crude rose 5.2 percent last week and started the week hovering around $46.40 a barrel.

That said, oil prices have fallen about 12 percent over the past three months as oversupply concerns have remained.
