The chase ended when the auto slammed into a barrier and a police vehicle near the Library of Congress, according to reports.

Authorities said the suspect crashed a vehicle into the patrol cruiser and a barrier at Second Street and Independence Avenue SE at about 11:45 a.m. According to Fox News, there were reportedly two vehicles involved in the event.

Police have said little about the investigation, which began about 12:30 p.m. near Independence Avenue and Second Street Southeast.

The Capitol Police distributed an email calling the auto "suspicious" and announcing that they would "disrupt the vehicle's trunk" as a "precaution".

The vehicle was stopped after the collision at Independence and First Street, and the police bomb squad was apparently called.

Whether the first auto was connected to the incident or if the driver of the second vehicle was distracted remains unclear.

One officer has received "multiple injuries" and has been taken to hospital.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the incident at about 1.30pm local time - 6.30pm United Kingdom time.

Here's roughly where the incident occurred. The Library of Congress is the unmarked building next to the circle.
