Spieth, victor of the Masters and the US Open in 2015, could become only the sixth player to win all four modern majors at next month's US PGA Championship following his stunning three-shot victory at Royal Birkdale.

Jordan Spieth has won the British Open after denying fellow American Matt Kuchar in a dramatic final round duel at Royal Birkdale.

When Ernie Els won the 2002 Open Championship his mind immediately drifted to winning the career slam. South African Grace has always been one of those players that when he gets it going, he can dismantle a course.

"We're making each other better players by trying to beat one another", he said.

Already a victor at the U.S. Open, US PGA Championship and The Open, Sarazen won the second edition of the Masters in 1935. He finished runner-up at the PGA three times after '61 and his career is by all accounts among the top three of all time, but that fourth major proved to be inexplicably elusive.

"We've been in situations enough where I know, and he knew, that we just had to slow it down, find a way to get this back in play and find a way to grind out a bogey".

"The first thing I think of", Johnson said, "is something that all of us as competitors, as athletes, strive to have, and that's the wherewithal, and certainly just the overall mental fortitude, to be able to come back from disaster, almost".

"I thought before the round that I had a reputation as being able to close but I was hesitant in saying "Majors" to myself", said Spieth.

" I feel like three years has been too long". One consideration is how he viewed his four-shot lead at the Masters that he converted into a green jacket.

"I watched a few highlights on Sunday and what he did over those last five holes sums him up", McIlroy said.

Also at Royal Birkdale was Jim "Bones" Mackay, perhaps golf's most famous caddie after spending 25 years with Phil Mickelson. He is coming off a tie for 20th in the British Open after closing with a 65 and gets a week off before going to the Bridgestone Invitational for his first World Golf Championship. I only got four [majors].

"Jordan, we are all so happy watching you win the greatest trophy in golf", nine-time Major victor Player said in a social media address to the new champion. I felt Jamie Lovemark equipped himself well and could win a US Tour event soon.

Palmer won seven major titles during his career, which took the sport to a new and larger audience thanks in part to his charisma, which consisted of four wins at Augusta, two victories at The Open and a solitary success at the US Open.

Spieth is right behind with three victories in 18 majors, followed by Rory McIlroy, who earned his third major in 23 attempts as a pro. Branden Grace's 62 was 7.026 shots better than the average score in the third round at Royal Birkdale, while Li Haotong's 63 in the final round was 7.13 shots lower than the field average.

Palmer, who passed away a year ago at the age of 87, initially came close at the 1964 PGA Championship at Columbus Country Club when he finished in a tie for second place, alongside great friend Nicklaus, behind eventual champion Bobby Nichols.

Woods, who has won 14 Majors, went on Twitter to write: "What an incredible way to come back and win".

"I don't know why I can't make it a little more boring sometimes".
