The former Super Bowl MVP was placed on a season ending injury reserve list after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in Saturday's open practice, and will be replaced by rookie free agent Austin Calitro. He played in 15 games, including 14 starts, for the Oakland Raiders last season, and he started all 16 games in 2015, when he had four sacks for the Raiders. He is one of just 10 defensive players to earn Super Bowl MVP honors. "I don't hurt as much for the organization as I do for him and all the hard work he put in this offseason to position himself to have the best year of his career".

The 49ers wasted no time in filling an open training camp roster spot left vacant by linebacker Malcolm Smith.

After originally going un-drafted, the six-foot CT native from Villanova University signed with the New York Jets on May 5, but was waived by the team on May 15.

Calitro, 23, in 2016 tied the Villanova team lead with 86 tackles, including 12 for loss and 3.5 sacks.
