The gender surcharge at the Handsome Her cafe is optional and the proceeds are donated to a women's charity, cafe owner Alexandra O'Brien told the Seven Network.

A cafe in Australia is trying to challenge the gender pay gap in its country by charging men more for their coffee.

The Handsome Her cafe is a vegan cafe that caters to its female clientele, so much so that men are charged an 18 per cent premium one week out of every month, which is the equivalent to the current gender pay gap plaguing every working female Australian.

The official pay gap in Australia has stayed between 15 and 19 percent for the last 20 years.

However, the cafe wrote on its Facebook page that so far, the response had been largely positive and that some men had travelled across town to "pay the man tax".

"If people aren't comfortable with paying it, or men don't want to pay it, we're not going to kick them out the door", she said.

"Who would have thought one little chalkboard would cause such a stir?"
