Barcelona's Sergi Roberto wanted as Nemanja Matic replacement following Manchester United

Matic joined United last month in a £40 million move and Scholes has welcomed the signing of the Serbian midfielder, who helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title last season.

"I think he's very similar in a way to Michael Carrick in a controlling midfielder, but what he brings what Michael doesn't bring is a little bit of aggression which as I say he gets to the ball, he tackles, he allows other people to play".

Lampard has no doubt that Matic's arrival will make United stronger.

"You would applaud that but those players aren't even at the club now".

The move has reunited Matic with former manager Jose Mourinho, who last week described the 29-year-old as a "genius" after he impressed in a friendly win over Sampdoria in Dublin, as well as prompting many to question why Chelsea would willingly strengthen a domestic rival.

The 23-year-old is not the finished article, but his energy and physical presence make his ideal for the Premier League.

Despite that miss potentially denying United a chance at taking the Champions League winners the distance, Mournho was happy with his new number nine.

"I think the [Matic] sale at this moment in time, with that Chelsea squad, could cost them the league".

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Tuesday, Neville said: "I said last season that the title will come to Manchester and was badly wrong but I do feel it will be between City and United this time".

"It amazes me, why would you sell Matic to Manchester United?".

"He seemed like he wanted to leave a year ago at times, although he was very influential and played very well", he said of Costa.

"It is hard job to play against a team that dominates the possession - and he tried", Mourinho said of his striker.

"But I repeat - for sure this a gross loss, a great loss for us".

"Chelsea are weaker than last season - no Diego Costa, no Matic - and I'm concerned for them". He's available, can we get him?' I think Chelsea more often than not have backed their managers and brought in the players needed.
