A bear broke into an SUV in the Durango, Colorado early Friday and tore it apart. The couple found the trashed Subaru in their yard.

Cornelius says he usually doesn't get up at 5:00 am but his wife heard all of the break-in noise and horn honking.

The freakish incident occurred early Friday in Durango, Colorado, rousing resident Ron Cornelius from his bed to discover his neighbor's Subaru crashed and abandoned on his front lawn.

The vehicle rolled backwards from a neighbour's house into the couple's mailbox and some utility boxes, Cornelius said. Mr Cornelius called 911 as he was not sure whether the incident had been a robbery.

The back window had been shattered, the radio was ripped out, and the steering wheel was pulled completely off the shaft.

"It would have taken a human being hours to do what this bear did in a couple minutes", said Ron Cornelius, who found the vehicle after the animal mowed down his mailbox, told the Durango Herald.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Joe Lewandowski said bears are not finding the berries they normally rely on ripening around this time of year due to a late front on 10 June.

'What we find is when they've become conditioned, when they have a habitat that has formed that humans provide an easy source as food - that's when a bear really becomes a problem.
