The numbers don't exactly show it - Newton managed to throw for 237 yards in a Week 17 loss, a week after going 18 for 43 in a loss to Atlanta - but the quarterback was less than his best self down the stretch last season, as Carolina limped to just two wins in its final six games.

Cam Newton has been dealing with some soreness in his surgically-repaired shoulder, but the Carolina Panthers quarterback took an important step forward on Sunday.

"Today was a good step, very positive, " Rivera said.

Newton threw four short passes during practice, which was the first time he threw in team drills since July 30.

Newton underwent surgery to fix a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder in March. "A lot of good things happened".

It was his first time throwing since the end of July.

Our models project Newton for 3,693 passing yards, 24.48 touchdowns, and 13.46 interceptions on 526 passing attempts, adding 92 rushes for 528 rushing yards and 5.13 touchdowns.

There's little to no reason for Newton to take a single snap of game action prior to Week 1 of the regular season, which everyone involved knows. The Panthers could limit Newton's mobility this season after bringing in playmakers such as Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel via the draft.
