China Opposes Japan Statements on South China Sea

China has had robust economic ties with Asean, a region of more than 600 million people with a combined GDP of $2.4 trillion.

Earlier this week the United States, Australia, and Japan collectively denounced China's continuing efforts to control the South China Sea and its increasingly vital shipping lanes.

Cayetano said: "Japan, Australia, and the U.S. are our friends".

The foreign ministers agreed to start operating a bilateral aerial and maritime communication mechanism as soon as possible in order to prevent any unintended clashes between the two countries in the East China Sea.

Most important was the agreement between ASEAN and China to adopt the draft framework for a Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea.

Some Asean ministers had not wanted land reclamation in the disputed islands to be mentioned in the communique.

The Philippine foreign secretary made these remarks at the end of the 50th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings hosted by the Philippines.

Before the ASEAN 50 founding anniversary, the Chinese government announced that the South China Sea territorial dispute should not allow outsiders to resolve the dispute but it should be resolved only by claiming parties involved.

Wang also said he wants the new Japanese foreign minister, who took office in a Cabinet reshuffle last week, to cherish lessons of history drawn by his father as well as the father's opinions.

"In view of this positive momentum, we reaffirmed our readiness to begin the substantive negotiation on the COC and tasked our senior officials to start the negotiation on the COC with China", the joint communiqué said.

They urged South China Sea claimants "to refrain from land reclamation, construction of outposts, militarization of disputed features, and undertaking unilateral actions that cause permanent physical change to the marine environment in areas pending delimitation", the statement said.

"A non-binding COC would be a disaster of the first order".

The three-step initiative towards realizing an effective COC in the disputed waters was proposed by China during the ASEAN-China Ministerial Meeting held here on Sunday.

Chinese structures and an airstrip on the man-made Subi Reef at the Spratly group of islands in the South China Sea.

Manila rejected advice from the U.S., Japan and Australia on Wednesday to abide by the ruling of an global tribunal that invalidated Beijing's claims in the South China Sea.

In a meeting with North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, Wang said he told his counterpart 'not to violate the United Nations decision or provoke the global community's goodwill by conducting missile launches or nuclear tests.
