Detroit Lions' Kerry Hyder leaves preseason opener with leg injury

The Detroit Lions lost their sack leader from last season to what appears to be a significant leg injury in the first quarter of their preseason opener today against the Indianapolis Colts.

FOX2 (Detroit) reported on television that Hyder suffered a lower leg injury and would be out for the game. If it was a full Achilles tear, Hyder would be out for the entire season. As he was getting on the cart, he didn't look like he could put any weight on his leg.

The Lions have been shorthanded at defensive end all of training camp as starting right end Ziggy Ansah is on the physically unable to perform list and top free-agent addition Cornelius Washington has been battling an ankle injury.

This would be a big loss for the Lions considering Hyder led the team in sacks in 2016 with eight of them. He found the end zone again in the second quarter, this time nabbing a back-shoulder catch for 15 yards after pulling away from Tevin Mitchel.
