The elephant died with minutes.Forest officials said Khan and veterinarian Dr Ajay Kumar had tracked the elephant near Banjali village in Jharkhand's Sahebganj district.Dr Kumar had tried to tranquillize the elephant from a distance of 30 meters.

Attacks by wild elephants are common in India, and government reports say more than 300 people are killed each year by them.

Sharpshooter Shafath Ali Khan said in an interview that he first came upon the animal on Thursday, and fired a tranquilizer dart into the elephant's neck but did not bring it down. "It is irony that an elephant was killed in a state where it is declared as state animal", he said. "It was a unsafe operation", Mr Khan said of the hunt in Sahibganj district of Jharkhand.

The wild elephant, believed to be about 25-years-old, had killed four people in Bihar in March before it crossed over to neighbouring Jharkhand state where it crushed 11 people to death. We are brainstorming a solution. one of them is to shoot the animal.

"In a challenging operation amid heavy rains, dense forests and low visibility, our team comprising 50 staff finally managed to track down the elephant on Friday evening", state chief forest wildlife conservator Lal Ratnakar Singh said. "This entire belt is inhabited by native tribal communities who have co-existed with wildlife for centuries, the elephants behaviour - that he was stalking humans - is still a mystery".
