The New York State Public Service Commission, to encourage residents and excavators to dig safely, joined a nationwide effort that recognizes August 11 as national "811 Day" to remind New York residents to always dial 811 to request underground utility lines be marked before any digging. Calling 811 is not only a free, safe and smart way to avoid injuries and disruptions to vital utility services; it is also a New York State requirement. "Still, even with that record number of calls, 44 percent of the damage to our electric facilities in 2016 occurred because someone did not call 811 before digging". PSEG Long Island has more than 5,000 circuit miles of underground electric distribution and transmission lines across Long Island and in the Rockaways. Even worse, a line strike can cause serious personal injury or even death. Striking a pipeline, wire or cable can result in costly repairs, fines or utility service outages.

The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons, such as erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces. Examples include putting in a mailbox, planting a flowerbed and building a deck.

Plan your job. Confirm all underground facilities have been marked before you dig by calling 8-1-1 or visiting http://response.missdig811.org. When calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to their local one-call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig.

"Gold Shovel Standard certification helps municipalities increase control over the safety and integrity of their buried infrastructure, and allows them to identify contractors who exhibit a commitment to extreme caution and safety training", said Bruce Campbell, CEO of MISS DIG System. However, emergency notifications can be made 365 days a year, 24 hours a day for excavations involving emergencies as defined in the Virginia Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act. Headquartered in East Syracuse, our Customer Service Representatives in our East Syracuse and Latham call centers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to receive calls regarding planned excavations.

Property owners and excavators must maintain and respect the marks.

Call Before You Dig governs safe digging practices in CT and offers a one-call system to locate and mark underground facilities that are near proposed excavation areas.
