Red cross officials said they are now unsure what caused the accident, but said it was likely the group was roped together and fell in the popular mountaineering spot.

The Italian news agency ANSA says one of the victims had been rescued Sunday in grave condition but later died of their injuries.

The Red Cross officials said the cause of accident was unclear but it was likely the climbers had fallen off the mountain while roped together.

Five mountain climbers have died in the Austrian Alps, east of Innsbruck.

Rescue workers have confirmed that out of the group of six, five have been killed.

Five helicopters were sent to the scene, and the injured climber was transported to a hospital in Schwarzach.

APA said the nationalities of the climbers have not been identified yet.
