Pierce's No. 34 will be the 22nd number retired in Celtics history, and the first since the club retired Cedric Maxwell's No. 31 in December 2003.

The Boston Celtics plan to retire Paul Pierce's No. 34 during the season next year, cementing his 15-year legacy with the franchise. The Truth retired at the end of last season, and less than a day after the finale, Wyc Grousbeck, one of the Celtics' owners, said in an interview that the team would retire Pierce's jersey.

In a tweet on Friday, the team announced that it will retire the 10-time All-Star's #34 during a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 11, 2018, at TD Garden.

Pierce, who retired as a member of the Celtics earlier this summer, spent the first 15 years of his career in Boston - earning 10 All-Star nods while winning the 2008 NBA Finals MVP during Boston's run to its 17th championship. "I'm a Celtic for life".

In all, Pierce averaged 21.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals across 1,102 regular-season games with the Celtics.

Boston drafted Pierce 10th overall in the 1998 draft. "For 15 years, I played at the Garden, looking up at the jerseys of some of the most iconic players in the game - Russell, Bird, and Cousy". Even after stints with the Wizards and Clippers late in his career, Pierce remained heavily associated with the Celtics and amicable with fans in Boston.
