Sanchez missed Arsenal's scintillating start to the new Premier League season, an abdominal injury forcing him to sit out the 4-3 victory over Leicester.

Giroud came big for the Gunners once again.

"I opened the door for him at some stage [to leave], because I know that it's important for him to play", Wenger said in his postgame news conference.

Giroud appears willing - if a little reluctantly - to accept his role as an understudy to Lacazette.

Arsenal turned around the league's first Friday opener in the closing minutes at Emirates Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal the lead early in the game in a dream debut for the French forward.

"He chose to stay and it was one of the great days of recent weeks for me".

"Not only as a player, he is a fantastic player, but as well in the group".

The French worldwide has been linked with an exit from the Emirates over the summer, and to the delight of Arsenal fans Marseille boss Rudi Garcia most recently revealed that they had ended their pursuit of the striker. "We had 27 attempts and they had three on target and three goals, but it's something we have to work on".

"I'm disappointed with the handball in the build-up, but once the corner's given you have to defend it better", he said.

Instead, they decided to make it hard for themselves again, like they so often do, and as a result, we got one of the games of the season in the first match of the new campaign.

"It is a relief and I believe as well a reminder to the players that they have hurdles on the way and that we can get round it, like tonight so that is quite positive".

Leicester showed some of the form that won them the title in 2016 and helped stave off relegation last term but in the end they were undone by canny France global Giroud who has been linked with a move away from Arsenal all summer.

"The spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding, we were punished on every single mistake by a Leicester team who was very efficient", he added.

"The first goal is on a short corner, we were not focused enough".
