Guam on alert after North Korean threats

This elaborately formulated clause excludes the island of Guam, as it is too far south. However, people in NATO circles are saying that the allies are unlikely to insist on this limitation and would support the US nonetheless. "Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!".

The American Federation of Teachers has urged President Donald Trump to demand that Saudi Arabia halt the execution of al-Sweikat and the 13 others. Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo says he coordinates with Homeland Security and the U.S. military on preparedness procedures.

In his phone call with Trump, Xi said China hoped the parties concerned would exercise restraint and refrain from taking any action that will aggravate tensions on the peninsula, according to CGTN.

Mr. Trump joked that Calvo - and his small island east of the Philippines - are now "extremely famous".

Trump's comments come a day after US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that Washington and its allies "now possess the most precise, rehearsed and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth." .

Worst of all, if American intentions aren't clear, an attempt to intercept a missile might be misinterpreted by Pyongyang - or Beijing or Moscow - and escalate into a real shooting war.

In July, North Korea claimed to have test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

Trump's focus on Guam's tourism seems relatively tone deaf at a time when North Korea has said it could fit nuclear warheads on missiles. I think that people are aware that this could happen, but they've also been living with this kind of threat since the first threat was made I think about in 2013.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday that "the risks are very high" that the US and North Korea could go to war, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said an escalation in language was "the wrong response".

Article Five of the North Atlantic Treaty states that "an armed attack against one or more [member states] in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all".

The government in London has always maintained a "special relationship" with the United States.

Even a non-nuclear conflict is almost unthinkable, warned Harry Kazianis, director of Defence Studies at the Centre for the National Interest in Washington, DC. "If the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so". "I see the need for enduring work at the UN Security Council.as well as tight co-operation between the countries involved, especially the US and China". The Red Army's intervention in the Korean War in 1950, which drove back the American-led U.N. forces and compelled a cease-fire, was the birth of a divided Korean Peninsula.

President Donald Trump pauses as he speaks to reporters about North Korea before a workforce and apprenticeship discussion at his golf estate in Bedminster, New Jersey, August 11, 2017.

Oh, and the Shifts boys are getting their Leaving Cert results.

The war of words has given China the chance to project itself as the voice of reason and restraint while others lose their heads. Yet, this is the sort of attention it has craved since the end of the Korean War. On Thursday, Beijing issued a chilling warning to both sides by way of the editorial pages of the Global Times, a loudhailer for Chinese diplomacy. Both sides would upgrade their alert to the highest level. If Kim Jong-un could make his first travel outside North Korea to Seoul in return for presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-yun's visits to Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007, then it would be an important step on the road to peace in Korea. Such a temporary agreement would not satisfy the US demand that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons, so the US would probably not sign such an agreement. This is Pyongyang's potential payoff.

Despite the tough rhetoric, Trump insisted that "nobody loves a peaceful solution better than President Trump".
