Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina claimed a crushing win over defending champion Simona Halep to reach the Rogers Cup final.

Looking to become the first player in 17 years to claim consecutive Rogers Cup trophies, Halep accounted for Caroline Garcia in straight sets, while Svitolina rallied from a set down to top Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza.

Both Svitolina and Halep were competing on little rest after rain pushed their quarter-final clashes to Saturday but it was the Romanian who was worse for wear as she dropped her first set of the tournament en route to losing the match in 56 minutes.

"Yesterday was really tough, waiting like six or seven hours here on site so I was a little bit exhausted", Halep said.

"It was a very tough match for me mentally because it was the second time I was playing on this court today", said Svitolina.

"I was just trying to play my game and I was very happy to win".

Svitolina will go into the final against Wozniacki with plenty of confidence having a 2-0 career record against her.

The two players, Halep and Svitolina, have split their head-to-head matches this season. But I think I'm ready, I feel strong enough in my legs. "I was going for the next one, and then the next one again".

Later on Saturday, Halep will be back in action against Svitolina, while Denmark's Wozniacki, the sixth seed, takes on American Sloane Stephens for a place in the final.
