Ireland is to feel the effects of Hurricane Gert this weekend as it makes its way across the Atlantic.

"Some of the downpours will lead to spot flooding". However, the tropical storm is to run out of steam before it can hit the west coast.

Gert will eventually merge with, or be absorbed by, another weather system in the Atlantic Ocean, Gutro and Pierce. It may not arrive until later in the weekend with Sunday set to be extremely wet with prolonged heavy rain forecast.

"I suspect that the worst time for Tayside and Fife will be the early hours into 9am-10am in the morning, after that the rain pulls away". It could well be that south west Scotland is on the northern edge of the front. The rain will be persistent and sometimes heavy with the ongoing risk of spot flooding. Its dependent on how the weather patterns develop over the next few days and the areas where rainfall is most concentrated.

The Hurricane has been causing havoc in the USA over the past few days and is due to hit Irish shores over the weekend.

The aftermath of Hurricane Gert is expected to hit the United Kingdom, splitting the North and South with very different weather. Temperatures will reach 14 degrees with 20km/h winds.

The US National Hurricane Centre has predicted: "A turn toward the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected later".
