J&K: Encounter underway in Shopian; 2-3 terrorists holed up

An encounter that broke out between militants and security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Saturday evening claimed the life of a soldier, police said.

Police said following specific information about the presence of a group of militants, security forces including army's Rashtriya Rifles, state police and Central Reserve Police Force surrounded Awneera village in Shopian.

Local sources said that forces resorted to pellet firing resulting in injuries to many protesters. "The encounter site on", said a police official.

They said that injured were shifted to SDH hospital Yaripora and District Hospital Kulgam. According to reports, two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped.

The witnesses said on seeing the security personnel, the residents, mainly youth, came out to hurl rocks at them. Police strongly denied rumours that a mosque was damaged during the gunfight between the security forces and the militants.

Clashes had erupted in Noorpora on Friday evening during cordon and search operation.
