Justin Verlander notched his eighth win of the season, surrendering just one hit in eight innings.

VerHagen (0-2) was making his second start in place of last year's AL Rookie of the Year, Michael Fulmer, who has been on the disabled list with an elbow injury since August 3.

Mikie Mahtook's home run pulled the Tigers within 4-3 in the third before Frazier's two-run double gave the Pirates the 6-3 lead. Nicholas Castellanos chipped in with a bases-clearing triple and five RBI as the Tigers ended a four-game skid.

Sean Rodriguez of the Pirates had a run-scoring single in the second to make it 2-2.

Cervelli went 0-for-3 yesterday and has started three straight games behind the plate, so today's probably a good day for a rest.
