Kansas City Chiefs promote Patrick Mahomes to No. 2 on depth chart

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Sunday that rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes will now be the backup quarterback.

Mahomes completed 7-of-9 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown against San Francisco in his Chiefs preseason debut. That came after Bray himself failed to do anything of substance in limited action.

That moves him ahead of former Tennessee standout Tyler Bray and only behind incumbent Alex Smith, per multiple reports.

Kansas City selected Mahomes, who played his college football at Texas Tech University, with the 10th overall pick of the NFL Draft back in April.

Mahomes stands No. 2 right now but Reid declined to say if the club planned for Mahomes' ascension up the depth chart at this point in training camp - or even if the switch stands permanent for the remainder of the preseason. "I thought he actually played very well, but it gives Patrick, who did a nice job too, an opportunity to step up and work with that second group and see what he could do there". Reid said Mahomes proved he can function effectively on the field while still learning the ropes.

While the depth chart churns on the lower rungs of the ladder, a starting quarterback controversy in Kansas City remains far beyond the horizon.

Mahomes took snaps with both the first- and second-team offenses, following Smith in the quarterback rotation.

Tight end Travis Kelce agreed with his coaching, indicating he sees the potential within the young quarterback. The starting job belongs to Alex Smith beyond a shadow of a doubt. He also scrambled 10 yards for a first down.

"We are throwing a lot at the guy and it's fun to see him grow". "But leading us and knowing his veteran presence has got some accountability to it". Reid said there's no guarantee all four will play in the remaining preseason games. The rookie may play a series with the first-team depending on how quickly Smith exits the game.

"We are going to give Patrick a chance to work with the twos like Tyler (Bray) has had here the last couple of weeks", Reid said.

Reid said Mahomes has also made progress when it comes to spitting out the Chiefs' lengthy playcalls. "(This decision) is just what I want to do". Kelce experienced inflammation in his knee from his 2013 microfracture surgery. Emergency kicker Sam Ficken handled kicking duties.
