Manchester United need players like Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho - Paul Merson

Merson has said that Chelsea, who had Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas sent off at Stamford Bridge, "have to go out and buy" if they are to be competitive in the Premier League and Champions League this term.

Chelsea's critics have argued that they are weaker than they were at the end of last season after John Terry's departure, Nemanja Matic's sale to Manchester United and Diego Costa's impending exit, and Merson says the squad does not have enough depth.

"As a Burnley player, you see their bench before kick-off and there is only Morata on it".

Chelsea made the worst possible start to their title defence on Saturday afternoon, with the Blues losing 3-2 at home to a Burnley team that only won one away match in the Premier League last season.

"With how strong this Premier League is, you can not afford to drop points at home to Burnley". They have to go out and buy. You go through the rest of the team, there's not too many who will put the ball through an eye of a needle. I do think 13/2 is a bit harsh for me, they're getting a bit carried away. "Oh definitely Tottenham", wrote Merson in his column for the Daily Star.

Merson reckons Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are the only stars at Old Trafford who have that ability, which is why they regularly struggled to break teams down last season, especially at home. "It's the same with Tottenham, if you take out five players they don't look so strong".
