Mickelson hoping to rediscover his best form

U.S. Presidents Cup captain Steve Stricker made the trip to Akron, Ohio, last week for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and during his time at Firestone sat down with Phil Mickelson. "I would love to see him on the team but, just like anybody else, I have got to see who is playing well at the time".

The problem is Stricker is looking for players who are playing well when he makes his two captain's selections on September 6, and Mickelson doesn't fit that bill at the moment.

All in all, it's been a rough 2017 season for Mickelson.

Along with the two missed cuts and an absence from the U.S. Open, Mickelson placed 22nd at the Masters with a final score of two-over as he failed to break 70 during his four-day stay in Augusta, Georgia. He did tie for 20th at the Greenbrier, but then missed the cut by four shots at the British Open, tied for 39th at Firestone and on Friday made an early exit at the PGA Championship with rounds of 79-74.

"Really we need the best guys playing the best at the end of the year going forward".

Mickelson ranks 17th in points but hopes for strong showings in the PGA playoffs to bump his way into 10 spots available on points or convince Stricker he deserves one of two captain's picks.

"If I can play well in those, I have a chance to get on the team on my own", Mickelson said. "If I play well in them and don't make it, I have a chance to be a pick, but I've got to play well in them is the thing", he told reporters.

But there's a common denominator there: Mickelson needs to play well. I don't feel like I did two years ago where I'm searching for my game or I'm trying to find it or trying to strike it well. "On the range, I'm having some of the best sessions, swinging the club fine, striking it pretty good". He just isn't scoring well.

"I'm not searching, it's not like I'm hitting the ball crooked, I'm just hitting it in the wrong spots. Not really controlling my thought process, where I want the ball to go", Mickelson added. "I'm just not really focused when I'm out there". I'm having a tough time visualising the shot. I'm having a tough time controlling my thoughts and not letting it wonder to what I don't want to have happen.

Stricker will be paying attention. But I know how important he is on the team, how good he is with the young guys and in the locker room and that kind of stuff. 'Hey, show me something.' That doesn't sound right. "I told him I would like to see him play well here on out to show me something, basically".

Stricker did not speak those words without reservation, as he followed those comments by adding: "That doesn't sound right coming from a guy like me talking to Phil". Hopefully he can get hot in there.
