He was hitchhiking without a shirt on, Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet said. He then ran into a corn field where he has been hiding for most of the day near Douglass High School.

Butler County officials say they have captured an escaped inmate from the Winfield Correctional Facility.

Douglass School District was on lockdown throughout the day while the search was underway.

Herzet said the search included police officers from Andover, Augusta, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, deputies from Sedgwick and Sumner counties and officers from the U.S. Marshal's Service.

Mitchell was taken into custody just before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Kansas Department of Corrections records state he was serving time for burglary and has prior convictions of burglary, theft and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He also may be wearing a red hoodie. Cowley County authorities say he should be considered risky.
