"West Nile virus activity has been low so far across Ontario, but it's not surprising to see activity begin to increase as historically we get positive mosquito pools around this time", public health inspector Stephanie Carlisle said in a press release.

The goal of the mosquito surveillance project, according to the health department, is to capture and test mosquitoes in 11 traps strategically placed throughout the county.

State officials say two mosquito-borne viruses that carry potentially serious health risks for humans have been detected in so-called sentinel chickens in DE for the first time this year.

"We expect West Nile to be present to some degree until the first frost", said Adam London, the administrative health officer with KCHD, in the release. The county also set four traps that attract the kind of mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus: Aedes Egypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes.

The first MI case of West Nile was diagnosed in 2001, two years after it appeared in the United States. Since then, more than 1,100 people in the state have been diagnosed and 92 have died.
