Mother, child murdered in Newton

Newton police say they are investigating a double homicide involving a 24-year-old mother and her 4-year-old daughter.

Police were called around 11 a.m.

Roanoke Court is overseen by the Newton Housing Authority, which provides public housing in the City of Newton. Authorities said Runyon was strangled to death and Zaylynn suffered stab wounds.

Murphy said an ex-boyfriend of Runyon's discovered the bodies after he stopped by her house after he became anxious she didn't respond to him.

Law enforcement are working to locate the the suspect and but they do not believe there is any danger to the public.

A suspect had been identified, but was not in custody, police said.

The Harvey County Sheriff, Kansas Highway Patrol, and KBI is assisting in the investigation.
