Manchester United and Chelsea are ready to pay £36.5m to meet Sergi Roberto's release clause with the versatile midfielder unsettled at Barcelona, according to a report in The Sun.

Jose Mourinho's search for a ideal midfield trio has led him to Barcelona, where he hopes to land a deal for Roberto.

The talented midfielder covered as a right-back for the Catalans for a good majority of the season following the departure of Dani Alves.

Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto is reportedly set to make a decision about his future at the Camp Nou this week after "reaching the limit of his patience" following the Blaugrana's signing of Paulinho on Monday.

It would not be the first time Barcelona has lost one of their players against their will after a buyout clause was activated, having also lost Neymar to PSG after the French giants stumped up £198m.

However, a move to Manchester could change that as the Mancunians have lined up a deal that would trigger Roberto's release clause.

Paulinho's arrival today has seen Roberto fall further down the pecking order and The Sun claim he was left livid after being named on the substitutes bench for Barca's Spanish Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid last night.

Jose Mourinho has been tipped to further strengthen his squad before the end of the month and Roberto would not only provide a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia but he'd also give the United boss another top class option in midfield.
