Mourinho eyes second season glory with United

Lukaku is not the only player being reunited by Mourinho, who also convinced Chelsea to sell Nemanja Matic to United.

Antonio Conte's comments about the "crazy transfer market" this summer highlight the lack of depth in the Chelsea squad and I don't see them as obvious champions, particularly with the extra challenge of European football and the fact it's hugely hard to defend a Premier League title.

"I think the challenge is to win more matches than we did", he said.

Nevertheless, West Ham travel to the North West in the knowledge that they picked up valuable draws on each of their last two league visits to the Theatre of Dreams, and Dear refused to rule out a Hammers victory: "Paolo Di Canio and Carlos Tevez have both scored winning goals for West Ham at United in recent years, he continued". Juan Mata and Anthony Martial too can fill in from the wings, while Rashford is a terror in a more central role.

We had lots of dominance at home, we had lots of chances, we had lots of matches where the result could or should be 2-0 or 3-0 and in the end was 1-1.

Guardiola has tested out a three-man defence in pre-season, with Stones lining up alongside Nicolas Otamendi and captain Vincent Kompany, whose ability to remain fit will once again be under scrutiny.

But what of his remarkable second-season record and what it might mean for the looming campaign?

The squad is surprisingly small, given the number of players Chelsea have loaned out to other clubs, and the departure of Matic leaves manager Antonio Conte hoping France's Tiemoue Bakayoko can quickly adapt after his arrival from Monaco.

"I am happy with the effort the club did and that the club managed to do 75 percent of the work before the Premier League starts and until August 31".

Frustrated by City's failings in his trophyless first season in England, Guardiola has overhauled his squad with defenders Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo, plus goalkeeper Ederson and playmaker Bernardo Silva.

"It takes time, I know that from experience of going to United at a young age".

Mourinho, who has been staying at the Lowry Hotel since taking over from Louis van Gaal, only recently returned to the UK following United's Super Cup defeat by Real Madrid earlier this week.

After a season in which the now-departed (but slated to return) Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted 28 goals, the obvious focus is on Lukaku to step into those boots.

"Last season we won trophies". Obviously the [remaining] 25% would be a player for another position playing from the sides. We always had that.

"We [Lukaku and Pogba] talked about it last season, wondering if one day we would play together and it's happened this season so I'm very happy".

"What I had in other clubs was more players scoring goals, what we had was midfielders, wingers scoring, central defenders scoring goals at set pieces", Mourinho said.
