Interestingly enough, though the Swede isn't expected to make a comeback before the end of this year, Mourinho has expressed his wishes to keep him while confirming the possibility of an extended stay.

The former Sweden global scored 28 goals for the Red Devils last season before suffering a knee injury against Anderlecht in April. 'He is not ready to play tomorrow.

"Zlatan is injured and needs time to recover", Mourinho said on Friday. The 35-year-old is now a free agent, and is expected announce his stay at Old Trafford soon.

"Between the players we have lost and the players we have got, I think we are in a similar situation but with more experience of working together and a much better pre-season".

With Champions League football back at Old Trafford this season it appears that Mourinho is determined to use any possible artillery to achieve his and the club's goals.

The tactician continued, "He thinks he can do more and wants more at the highest level, so we're having conversations and we're discussing the possibility of him to stay with us for the second part of the season.".

Ibrahimovic recorded a goal every 137 minutes in his debut season for United last season.

One of the the Portuguese manager's objectives is to win the Premier League, having stumbled home sixth in a campaign that brought Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield glory.

"I would say there are seven teams to fight for the title and 20 teams to fight every week for every match".

The Red Devils often struggled to find a way past teams last term, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic provided the key impetus with 17 Premier League goals, although no other player was able to reach double figures.

"But we are involved in four competitions and step by step, match after match we are going to fight".
