NC boy suffers severe burns after attempting 'hot water challenge'

Pope is just one victim of a unsafe viral trend called the Hot Water Challenge, said to be inspired by YouTube videos.

This video, which apparently shows someone participating in the Hot Water Challenge, has made rounds across Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube, where it was first shared a year ago.

Similar to the cinnamon challenge that found folks ingesting unsafe amounts of cinnamon that could cause choking deaths, the "Hot Water Challenge" might sound like a harmless prank to some people, but is anything but harmless.

The Hot Water Challenge is a "game" that involves pouring boiling water on unsuspecting children or daring the individual to drink boiling water through a straw.

Wesley Smith, a 10-year-old boy from North Carolina, sustained bad injuries after he attempted the game with his step-brother.

An 8-year-old Florida girl died Monday from complications after drinking boiling water on a dare.

She said Smith has spent several weeks in a Winston Salem Burn Center and will need to undergo several surgeries.

"I think the only reason why she in good spirits is because she didn't actually see the damage done to her", her uncle, Eugene Dalmida (52) told The Post. Clearly, some people did not realize this, and today in 2017, kids are dumping boiling hot water on each other.

The Burn Foundation have warned boiling water takes just seconds to cause third-degree burns - or full-thickness burn - which destroys all layers of the skin and can lead to permanent scarring.

The little girl, from Florida in the United States, had to receive a tracheotomy but died after a shortage of breath left her unconscious.

Throwing boiling water on someone is clearly one of the dumbest and cruelest things a person can do. They ain't letting her see her face.

These awful challenges don't seem like they're going to go away. The girl's mother claimed the two came up with the idea after watching a video on YouTube. Merritt's mother has blamed the incident on the Hot Water Challenge; Merritt's cousin said that Merritt "and her friend got into an argument and she told her if she goes to sleep they were going to do something to her".
