Romelu Lukaku made a good impression on Jose Mourinho on his competitive debut for Manchester United, despite missing an open goal in Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

That's according to new signing Nemanja Matic at the very least, who was ready to defend his former and current teammate Romelu Lukaku, and offer his backing in light of Lukaku's awful miss - and predict he will score many goals for the Red Devils.

While Conte says the 22-year-old's progress will need to be hastened in the wake of Matic's exit, he also claims that more signings are possible.

The former Red Devils midfielder told Paddy Power: "Some people have said that they can't believe Chelsea let Matic go to United, and that they've handed them the title, but I don't see that".

Matic faced a battle with Cesc Fabregas and new signing Tiemoue Bakayoko to start alongside N'Golo Kante in Antonio Conte's midfield this season.

"I heard whispers at the back end of last season that he wanted to go and even if the club can not come out and say too much about that, maybe there was an element of that in play here when this deal went through".

Conte added that he was optimistic Morata, who Chelsea signed for a club record £70m, has a bright future ahead of him at Stamford Bridge.

"This league is not easy".

Conte has repeatedly stated Chelsea's need to improve their squad depth in the final weeks of the summer transfer window, and Lampard remains confident that the Premier League champions will get the players they need to compete on four fronts this season. The transfer market is not finished.

"Alvaro is a really good player, he's still young despite having a lot of experience", he said. As a Chelsea fan you're always going to want more: 'Can we buy the best players? "It's a great challenge for us to try and retain the title, but we are working hard". "There is a lot of games, it's a long season but I expect us to do well".

"He had a good fight against two good central defender and I am happy with this period and how he fits into - I am never exhausted to repeat - an fantastic group".
