Neymar completed his sensational record breaking move to PSG last week after the French club paid his £198 release clause.

Speaking at the World Congress of Penyes, Bartomeu said, "He wanted to leave".

"We're waiting now for him to play to start to help us win everything this season".

Bartomeu added that the team would move away from its recent axis of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, the most prolific front three of all time, to focus on building a stronger team overall.

"We want to close that chapter".

"Neymar has formed part of our club, but he is now history". It is his decision, even if we did all we could to keep him.

"We always acted responsibly and while we do not share his decision, we do respect it - although that's not to say we don't defend our own interests".

"We must not look back but instead look ahead and focus on the future as that is what we must do".

He said: "The 222 million euros that we received for Neymar Jr will be administered with prudence, rigour and serenity". "It will be used to improve the club and with this it means that we are in a great position to sign players", Bartomeu said in meeting of Barcelona fans on Monday (7 August). "Lionel Messi, the best player ever, shall continue to lead this team".

"If he'd stayed we would have kept an exceptional player, and if he went we'd be able to guarantee we could sign other players".

"We will bring in players".

Neymar signed a new contract at the club in October of past year but admitted that the club had an inkling he would leave and that they are already in talks about the Brazilian's replacement.
