Partick Thistle sign Miles Storey and Conor Sammon

Speaking after the win over Partick Thistle and ahead of the midweek Champions League play-off clash with Astana of Kazakhstan, Rodgers has told The Scottish Herald that he will now look closer at signing another striker in order to add a natural No. 9 to his ranks. A calf strain reduced striker Leigh Griffiths' involvement at Firhill to a late cameo off the bench, with James Forrest leading the line from the start to little effect.

The Ulsterman, who watched his side take the points when midfielder Olivier Ntcham fired in a drive which took a deflection off skipper Scott Brown, said: "We wanted Leigh to get 90 minutes in preparation for Astana but his calf played up again and that was always a danger". It's going to be a tough game for us and the first game is important. But he felt fine this morning and got his half-hour. "He came back super fit, but what we can't do is take a risk with him". It is not a frustration, he is just unfortunate. But if there's an unavailability and it's consistent, then I need to seriously look at that. "I will have a close look at that between now and the end of August because I think James and some of the others do great up there, but if we've strikers not available then I may need to look at more cover for us there". "Because you can see it". The guys are doing great for us.

"It is really about the availability of a player".

Rodgers said: "I'm not anxious, but I wouldn't be surprised". But it's certainly a team we will go and be aggressive with to get a good result.

But the Hoops boss is confident the defender, above, won't be tempted away. I don't know why he hasn't given it.

While Celtic controlled large parts of the game during a routine 1-0 win, the English Premier League was kicking off with a seven-goal thriller between Arsenal and Leicester City.

"When you are at Partick Thistle and the small club mentality, I don't really think you expect it in the last minute against Celtic".
