They were looking at Marco Verratti, but later turned their heads to Paulinho, a Brazil global playing for Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League.

Chinese media reported on Saturday evening that the 29-year-old Brazilian would travel to Spain to complete the move after Barcelona triggered Paulinho's release.

Barcelona have signed Guangzhou Evergrande midfielder Paulinho for €40m (£36.5m), according to the Daily Mail.

In July Barcelona offered £17m for the star but have since increased their offer significantly in order to complete the deal.

He played 67 times for Spurs during those two seasons, scoring 11 times, but was eventually sold for a fee of around £10million as he headed to China in the summer of 2015.

Paulinho has been linked to a move to Barcelona throughout the summer but Evergrande chairman Xu Jiayin had previously stated he would not be allowed to leave before the end of the season due to the cost associated in replacing him.

"It is a unique opportunity for me to be able to play for Barcelona, the best team in the world and surrounded by the best players", he said.

'I have to talk to my president, since I got the proposal I have not stopped thinking about it and I am waiting for everything to be resolved this week'.

Coutinho put in a formal transfer request on Friday, just minutes after Liverpool insisted he was not for sale after rejecting an offer of £90m.
