Protesters Deface Confederate Statue in Atlanta

After the weekend's violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia the Lee County NAACP once again calls for Confederate symbols to be removed from Lee County.

When Charlottesville began deliberating the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue, there were varying points of view as to why it should or should not remain and democratic discourse ensued. The chapter's 2015 efforts to change Lee's portrait in county commission chambers were unsuccessful.

On Sunday, some Atlanta protesters targeted a statue with links to the Confederacy - the Gate City Guard statue near the 14th Street entrance to Piedmont Park.

Fort Myers Councilwoman Teresa Watkins Brown said Lee is part of history, but she is "not always proud of what happened in our history". Contreras is a member of the AP's race and ethnicity team.
