The Red Sox placed the second baseman on the DL Saturday with left knee inflammation, an issue he's been battling since knee surgery last winter.

After one game and four at-bats, Dustin Pedroia is heading right back to the disabled list for a third time this season.

Fantasy Impact Pedroia came off the disabled list on Tuesday but his knee flared up immediately and he hasn't seen the field since.

Then Pedroia sat out Friday night's game in the Bronx, which raised some eyebrows about his availability. This is arguably the biggest series of the season and the guy who leads all qualified hitters on the team in batting average isn't ready to play? The teams meet nine more times in the next 23 days.

MLB.com reports the Red Sox are confident Pedroia's injury is not a season-ender.

Boston recalled Robby Scott from Triple-A Pawtucket in response to Pedroia's return to DL.

Pedroia had cartilage surgery on his knee last October 12. According to manager John Farrell, the veteran second baseman is dealing with a recurrence of swelling and inflammation in his surgically repaired left knee and didn't respond favorably to treatment. Eduardo Nunez will continue seeing an everyday role at second base in his absence.
