The Hermit Kingdom of North Korea

And just days before that, the president promised to unleash "fire and fury" on the tin-pot country, should dictator Kim Jong Un continue to make unwelcome advances against the United States.

Things are quickly heating up between the USA and North Korea, and there are no signs it will slow down after the Pentagon said Friday the military stands ready to "fight tonight", if necessary.

Recent missile tests have put worldwide attention on North Korea, a country vying to be the world's next nuclear power.

North Korea responded to Trump's rhetoric by threatening to attack the American Pacific island territory of Guam.

Trump raised alarm around the world - and particularly in Asia - by warning that North Korea would face "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if it were to keep threatening the US.

Meanwhile, James Clapper, former director of National Intelligence, said he feared the president's rhetoric could "spiral" out of control into a global conflict. I'd say he's being incredibly irresponsible and he's putting us in a situation where you could have an accidental launch. I don't think we are there yet.

North Korea has responded in kind, assuring the United States of "total defeat" in the event of a war and claiming it is preparing for an attack on the American military base in Guam in mid-August.

According to the White House, Trump and Xi affirmed that the recent adoption of a new UN Security Council resolution regarding North Korea was an important and necessary step toward achieving peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Clapper said the USA and North Korea could "blunder" into global military conflict as they exchange escalating hostilities.
