In doing so, the Lionsgate release is on track to top last week's victor, Annabelle: Creation, and fellow newcomer Logan Lucky, Steven Soderbergh's first film in four years.

"The Hitman's Bodyguard" predictably earns #1 on the USA weekend box office chart. The film follows one of the world's top bodyguards (Reynolds) as he is forced to protect his enemy, a notorious hitman (Jackson). That was considered a respectable take on what has been the lowest-grossing weekend of the year.

The film received a lackluster 38% on Rotten Tomatoes - but audiences appeared to enjoy it more than critics, giving it a 75% rating on the site.

The Bleecker Street production stars Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Riley Keough in an unconventional heist comedy, with a sort of dysfunctional "Oceans 11"-style team planning a huge robbery at a NASCAR race". August has been relatively slow for movies, decelerating after big box office hits like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Wonder Woman took up a large chunk of the box office domination over the course of June and July. That figure marks a second-weekend drop of 56 percent - somewhat steep, though on par with the original Annabelle - and it brings the horror flick's domestic total to $64 million after 10 days in theaters.

In between the newcomers is Annabelle: Creation, Warner Bros. and New Line's fourth installment in the Conjuring franchise, which is on pace to earn an estimated $15.5 million this weekend.

Rounding out the top five at the box office was the animated feature "The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature".

Overall, it has been a tough season for the studios: summer ticket sales are about 13 percent behind last summer, according to ComScore.
