Three terrorists, two army soldiers killed in Shopian encounter

Three militants were killed while a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander managed to give slip to security forces in an overnight encounter in south Kashmir's volatile Shopian district.

According to a senior police official, three terrorists were shot down by security personnel and a counter-operation is now underway.

Three militants killed in the encounter with the state government forces in Awneera, Zainpora area of district Shopian belonged to Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit, police said today.

Three Kashmiri rebels and two Indian soldiers have been killed in a fierce gunbattle in the disputed Himalayan region, police said Sunday.

The area has been cordoned, as around three terrorists are believed to be holed up and attempts are being made to smoke them out. The firing from terrorists prompted the security forces to wait until dawn while keeping a tight cordon around the area before launching a major strike.

Five army soldiers were injured in the gunfight. Several other soldiers were injured who were airlifted to army's 92 base hospital at Badamibagh here.

Ghaznavi joined militancy in year 1997 after crossing over to other side of the Line of Control. Supporting the militants, locals have been reported to have pelted stones on the forces as soon as the firing started.

Anti-India protests followed the fighting Saturday and Sunday, leading to clashes between rock-throwing residents and government forces who fired shotgun pellets and tear gas.
