Todd Bowles clearly trying to take the heat off Hackenberg

Bowles announced that Bilal Powell (neck) will not play, and the status of Matt Forte (hamstring) has not been determined.

"I'm not basing this game exclusively on Christian's star debut as a movie theater actor", Bowles said.

Rookie running back Eli McGuire practiced with the first team on Thursday, and could start in the preseason opener. The sophomore is in an open competition with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty.

All three quarterbacks will play, he said. He's gonna get a lot of reps. "[They] just got to focus". "Whether he plays good or bad doesn't determine his reps for the next week or after that".

Christian Hackenberg completed 18-of-25 passes for 127 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions in Saturday's preseason opener.

"You want him to get better every week", Bowles said. You can't compare last year to this year. He barely played, so it'll be his first time out.

Bowles said nobody should interpret Saturday's starter as the leader in this three-man competition, even though it appears McCown now leads, and Petty is a distant third.

"It's the same opportunity they had before anybody got hurt", Bowles said. Hackenberg avoided big mistakes, but also failed to make anything of note happen.

"Not too much surprises me in the first preseason game", Bowles said.
