The White House says that Trump - in a phone call Friday to President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) - saluted Xi for China's United Nations vote to impose tougher sanctions on North Korea.

Trump and Macron spoke over phone and discussed the need to confront the increasingly risky situation regarding North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour, the White House said.

Xi Jinping, the leader of North Korea's key ally China, urged Trump on Saturday to avoid rhetoric that could inflame tensions, after the USA president ramped up his warnings to Pyongyang, saying the Stalinist regime would "truly regret" taking hostile action against the United States. "President Trump stated that the United States is ready, along with its allies, to apply the full range of diplomatic, economic and military measures to achieve that goal", the readout of the phone call released by the White House said".

The statement came just hours after Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged Trump in a separate phone call to avoid rhetoric that could inflame tensions with Pyongyang.

They agreed that North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behaviour, the White House said.

France is a member of the Security Council, which approved fresh sanctions on North Korea this month for its recent intercontinental ballistic missile testing.

Trump also reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, it added.
