Two Siouxlanders pitching in on Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

One Big Island Red Cross volunteer already deployed to Houston over the weekend, and five other Red Cross volunteers from Hawaiʻi will depart for Houston on Sunday or Monday. "They are always ready to go and do what they need to help".

But right now, they just have to get through the drive.

The American Red Cross started preparing for a Category 4 storm with devastating impact across the Gulf Shore.

The Red Cross says numerous hospitals, nursing facilities, and dialysis centers are closed.

Officials with the Duluth Red Cross say four people from Northern Minnesota will leave to help with hurricane recovery efforts in Texas.

Perkins' is an experienced volunteer, she started after Hurricane Katrina. The Red Cross expects to provide relief for several weeks, if not months, while cities, towns and residents recover from the disaster.

Broomfield says the National Guard has been transporting Red Cross volunteers in high water vehicles so they can get out and help the people who need it.

All Hands Volunteers describes themselves as "a US-based, 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters by engaging and leveraging volunteers, partner organizations and local communities".

"We see people - I can't even imagine - flogging through the water knowing you don't have dry clothes, you don't have whatever ready accessible", Burnett said. Donors can designate their donation to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts by choosing that option when donating on redcross.org or on 1-800-RED CROSS.

A dedicated Red Cross volunteer since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hungerford chose to answer the call for help and is cutting her trip short. "We have volunteers that are supervising with logistics expertise planning the moving of relief supplies for the operation, moving supplies from location to location or getting people to the necessary locations, working in warehouses and moving vehicles if necessary". The Red Cross has trailers full of shelter supplies including cots and blankets, the Red Cross said.
