Sixth seed Wozniacki, the champion in 2010, saw off unseeded American Stephens 6-2 6-3 in the first semi-final in Toronto. The Dane has been the tour's most winningest player, amassing 46 wins against just 15 losses, but in each of her five previous finals she has fallen.

Stephens showed some fight-back late in the set, taking advantage of a brief letdown from Wozniacki - whose backhand started to misfire - to get a break back.

In earlier quarter-final matches on Saturday, Simona Halep continued her quest to defend her Toronto title with a straight sets win, while Elina Svitolina needed three sets to book the last semi-final spot.

Having dropped only one game in her victory over Barbora Strycova, Halep was a convincing victor once again as she eased past Caroline Garcia 6-4 6-2.

Speaking after the victory, the 27-year-old said: "Almost every tournament I've played this year there has been a rain delay so at this point I just have to laugh because I feel like it is following me". It's not going to be easy; I'll be playing against a very good opponent.
