The now Category 3 storm is expected to strengthen before it makes landfall in the lower Keys Sunday morning, then inch up the west coast, working its way up Florida's peninsula.

President Donald Trump, who spent the weekend monitoring Hurricane Irma from Camp David with members of his cabinet, called the Category 2 storm "some big monster" on Sunday.

"The storm surge will rush in and it could kill you", Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned early on Saturday.

Florida residents who chose to stay rather than heed official warnings to evacuate their homes have told of their fears as Hurricane Irma pounds the Sunshine State.

Owing both to the speed of the storm's winds and its sheer size, Hurricane Irma is likely to cause a devastating storm surge across the region.

A recent view from NASA's Aqua satellite on Saturday morning revealed cold temperatures in the cloud tops of thunderstorms surrounding Hurricane Irma's core, as well as in a band of thunderstorms over the Florida Keys.

The fire department did not respond to 81 fire calls, including reports of downed wires and automatic alarms, and was able to get to only one house fire.

Parts of Miami that don't see tidal flooding were inundated thanks to Irma's storm surge. It was smacking Naples after coming ashore in Marco Island at 3:35 p.m. The dispatcher told her how to tie it off, Assistant Fire Chief Eloy Garcia told the Miami Herald.

At least one construction crane, one of many in the area put at risk by high winds, partially collapsed in downtown Miami.

The National Hurricane Center says the eye of the storm is 25km southeast of Key West.

Edwards posted on the page as Irma made landfall.

Although it's assumed planes and pilots would divert away from Florida, this image is still powerful. "The Coast Guard has been amazing with what they are doing right in the middle of the storms". The parks are closed in the Tampa Bay Area, so some dog owners are taking advantage of the newly-open space.

More than 5.6 million Floridians have been ordered to evacuate. The game will be played in Tallahassee. Miami played Bethune-Cookman in Week 1 while Florida State lost to Alabama.

"After it happens, be patient, wait until local officials tell you to go back", he added.

Elaine Duke, acting head of the Homeland Security Department, expressed confidence that the federal government can simultaneously manage the aftermath of Irma and Harvey.
