NK military preparing for winter training: S. Korea

Kim Dong Chul, a South Korea-born US citizen, was sentenced in 2015 to 10 years hard labor for "subversion and espionage" after North Korean officials said he received a USB stick containing nuclear-linked and military secrets from a South Korean source in North Korea.

North Korea has not commented on the incident.

Violence has broken out in the area in the past.

Lee Cook-jong, the surgeon in charge of the soldier's care at the Ajou University Hospital, told reporters his patient was suffering from critical intestinal damage.

The latest South Korea-China summit came after the countries agreed to normalize their ties in an agreement issued Oct. 31. Kang said nuclear submarines were part of the discussion about beefing up the military.

He is being investigated by the army, intelligence services and police.

On Monday, he first drove a military jeep but left the vehicle when one of its wheels fell into a ditch.

A North Korean soldier defected to the South after his own military shot and wounded him.

Trump continued his tough talk against Pyongyang on Friday in a speech to business leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Da Nang, Vietnam, saying that the region's future "must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies of violent conquest and nuclear blackmail", referring to the North Korean leader.

According to South Korea's Ministry of Defense, a 58-year-old man from Louisiana entered a controlled area in Yeoncheon County, on the border with North Korea, early Monday morning.

Two American soldiers also were killed in the DMZ by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers in a 1976 brawl over an attempt to trim a poplar tree. Cooperation between the neighbors is regularly hindered by historical grievances stemming from Japan's colonial occupation of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945. The latter stands for ASEAN's respective cooperation mechanism with China, Japan and South Korea. It is located inside the 4-kilometer-wide (2 1/2-mile-wide) Demilitarized Zone, which forms the de facto border between the Koreas since the Korean War.

A North Korean mother and child arrested with other defectors by Chinese police last weekend in Shenyang risk torture and abuse if they are forcibly sent home, the woman's husband said from South Korea while calling on Chinese authorities not to repatriate his family.

South Korea's military said it has strengthened its vigilance and readiness posture in case of a possible military provocation by the North.

The defector, dressed in a combat uniform, was unarmed, Al Jazeera reported.

Joining the three US carriers and their strike groups were three Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force warships including the helicopter destroyer JS Ise, a guided-missile destroyer and general purpose destroyer.
