Daniel Cormier announces plans to retire by March 2019

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is nearing 40 years old, and despite dominating a much younger challenger in Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220 on Saturday, he has already planned his retirement date. Miocic set the UFC heavyweight record with his third straight successful title defense, turning the anticipated slugfest against Ngannou into a methodical and masterful ground-and-pound bout to win the main event of UFC 220 at TD Garden.

"Come March, I will have 12 months, at max, left", Cormier said.

Miocic may be "The Baddest Man on the Planet", but he's going to need some help making that known to casual followers of MMA.

But the whirlwind of fighting someone of Lesnar's stature is something Miocic hasn't been through.

With a Boston crowd roaring and chanting his initials, Cormier showed why he's the best active light heavyweight fighter in UFC and dominated Oezdemir via TKO to retain the 205-pound belt. Cormier dropped to his knees on the canvas and said this fight was the validation he needed to prove he was worthy of being called champion.

But the truth is, Miocic should take his time to heal up and enjoy his well-deserved break, because realize a fight with Brock Lesnar is looming. I've done it and I had a killers row of fighters to get to it.

He is a dark horse in this division who is flying well under the radar.

Oezdemir entered the fight after knocking out both of his previous victims inside a minute and he came out intent on flattening Cormier in similar fashion. I've loved every moment of it, my family revolved around sports. Not only my family, Selena and the kids, but also my mom and my dad. I've been the center of the athletic universe for my family for a really, really long time. "It's my story", Cormier said.

Now, Cormier has talked about the fact he doesn't intend to fight past 40, in the past. Abdul Razak Alhassan left no doubt this time around against Sabah Homasi, flattening him with a huge uppercut in the first round of their welterweight rematch, after a controversial ending back at UFC 218 last December. We'd also never seen him let a fight go to decision, so we didn't know if he could go three rounds, let alone five. Jury just looked spectacular at UFC 219 and says he's open to fight anyone.

"It's not like I'm fighting small guys". Next guy, 'JDS' (Junior dos Santos), who I lost to.

Traditionally, it is White who presents the strap to his champions and the snub suggested Miocic and White were not on great terms.

It was a wonderful performance from Miocic, and onlookers noticed the champion sent a clear message to White in the octagon. Gustafsson, who Cormier edged by split decision in 2015, is recovering from shoulder surgery. Now, Cormier has his broadcasting gig with FOX Sports to fall back on, and his occasional commentary at UFC events. The bout marked the first time Cormier had competed, since he was knocked out by Jon Jones last July (that result was overturned, however, as a result of a USADA notification the latter was served). Apparently, Jones' CSAC hearing is, as of now, slotted for some time in the coming month. If Hunt wins, that's the fight to make. While fights against Cormier and Velasquez are intriguing and would likely be fantastic, this is the era about the blockbuster fights.

That's a statement I'm sure the UFC wouldn't agree with.
