Manchester United held talks with Ander Herrera's representatives in America as they move closer to a new long-term deal, according to the Telegraph's James Ducker.

Herrera, the former Athletic Bilbao star and reigning Player of the Year at Manchester United, has 12 months left to run on the deal he signed in June 2014 following his £28.8 million move from to Old Trafford, albeit with the option of a further year. United hope to have completed the deal before the start of the new campaign so both the club and the player can focus on the season ahead.

United are keen on extending Herrera's stay at the club beyond 2019.

The Red Devils have already made two signings in the summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho looks to prepare his squad for a return to the Champions League next term.

The Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League to add more silverware to their vast collection. By the sound of things, there is no doubt that he will continue to develop with the club in the long term.

After a hard second season at United under Louis van Gaal, Herrera was switched into a more defensive midfield role by Jose Mourinho.

United are set to arrive home on Thursday from their pre-season tour in three countries where they have played league rivals Manchester City and Spanish Giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
