The National Storm Prediction Center has placed the Chicago area in Slight to Marginal Risk of severe storms accompanied by damaging winds and hail later Thursday/Thursday night (see highlighted map).

The greatest risk of severe weather will extend from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin to Iowa to part of the Lower Michigan Peninsula, southeastern Wisconsin and northern IL. The threat fades overnight with the chance for isolated storms returning Friday afternoon, though most areas will remain dry. With an increasingly unstable air mass in place, showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out across Wisconsin and spread southeast over our area during the afternoon.

The weather service in Birmingham said areas with the best chances of storms will be along and north of a line from Tuscaloosa to Calera to Wedowee.

Scattered showers and storms grow more likely in the evening hours, possibly becoming severe in far northern counties.

Storms are expected to continue into the weekend as well.

Isolated severe storms will be possible across a large part of Alabama on Saturday.
