Citing a transcript of their conversation available to senior diplomats, the Sun reported that Trump asked May to "fix it" and said he was in "no rush" to make the state visit.

But Khan also declared that he would meet with Trump if the opportunity arose, stating a particular desire to use his position to rebut some of Trump's anti-Muslim bigotry.

He added: 'State visits are different from a normal visit and at a time when the President of the U.S. has policies that many in our country disagree with, I am not sure it is appropriate for our government to roll out the red carpet.

"If you somehow think it is not possible to be a Muslim and a proud westerner I am happy to disabuse you of that idea, whether you are a reporter for CNN or Donald Trump".

Khan and Trump's relationship is known to be a particularly rocky one, following Khan's opposition to Trump's decision to bar from the United States people from a list of mainly Muslim countries.

"If someone has views that I think can be changed, I am ready to play my role", Khan told CNN. "When I know I'm going to get a better reception, I'll come and not before".

It leaves open the possibility of a low-key visit to London before the end of this year if Trump is in Europe on other business.

The President attacked Mr Khan after he had told Londoners there was "no reason to be alarmed" by the increased police presence in the capital.

Trump harshly criticized Khan in June in the wake of an attack in London that killed seven people and wounded dozens more.

In a sharp rebuttal, Khan said his remarks had been taken out of context as he had been referring to the enhanced police presence. Khan's office pointed out that he never used those words, which Trump regarded as a "pathetic excuse".

Earlier this year, more than 1.8 million people signed a petition seeking to block Trump's trip over fears that it would "cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen". "MSM [mainstream media] is working hard to sell it!"
