After an hour-long meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party Parliamentary Board, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Naidu was announced as the ruling National Democratic Alliance's candidate.

Adding to the praises pouring in for NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate M. Venkaiah Naidu, Home Minister Rajnath Singh while lauding the "well-deserved" candidate said more than a leader, the former is a "socio-political activist".

Venkaiah Naidu will be contesting against Gopalkrishna Gandhi who was jointly picked up by the opposition comprising 18 parties.

Venkaiah Naidu as the BJP leader had supported the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

According to BJP sources, one of the reasons why Naidu was nominated for the Vice President's post is due to his vast experience in parliamentary affairs.

Unlike the electoral college for the Presidential election, which includes members of state legislatures, the Vice-President is chosen exclusively by Parliamentarians.

The Vice Presidential polls will be held on August 5 after the incumbent Hamid Ansari's term gets over.

The JD-U had broken ranks with the opposition on the presidential election when it chose to support the ruling NDA's nominee Ram Nath Kovind. I'm not aspiring to become anything, party finally decides about the candidature. "I am happy serving as Usha-pati (husband of his wife Usha)", he had remarked.

"Venkaiah is a senior political leader across party lines and is a senior leader of the BJP which he had been associated from his youth".

The fact that Naidu is from South India could also be a deciding factor. As a Union Minister over last three years, he has been representing the interests of both Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He was also BJP's national spokesperson from 1996 till 2000.

The vice-president is also the head of the Upper House, and has the same position as the Speaker does in Lok Sabha, or the lower house of Parliament.

Naidu has a tough task cut for him if he becomes the vice-president and the chairman of Rajya Sabha - managing the smooth running of the House.

Naidu was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 1998, only to be re-elected in 2004, 2010 and 2016.

His cordial relations with the Opposition parties would help him run the Rajya Sabha smoothly.

Venkaiah Naidu began his political career as an RSS Swayamsevak and ABVP leader during his college days.
